Macro and the forty-dollar stack

Ten people on Superhuman and Linear alone costs $5,880 a year, and all it buys is an inbox and a task board. Macro does email, chat, docs, tasks, calls and CRM out of one app for $40 a seat, and it moved to the AGPL in May, which means the escape hatch is written into the license.

A spreadsheet connects to a web app that displays its data and writes edited entries back to the sheet.

Your spreadsheet just got a front end

A twelve-person team pays about $2,880 a year for a tool whose actual job is putting a usable view on data that already lives in a spreadsheet. Google now builds that view from one sentence and writes changes back to the sheet, and it fixes none of the reasons the spreadsheet was a bad system of record.

Twenty and the data model you were renting

A ten-person sales team on Salesforce list pricing pays about $21,000 a year, and the thing they are actually renting is not the software. It is the shape of their own business. Twenty puts that shape in a repository you own, and it shipped four releases in two days.

Open Design and the seat everybody waits on

A Figma Full seat costs $16 a month for every person allowed to make something instead of just look at it, and the queue behind the one person who has it is worse than the bill. Open Design is an Apache-2.0 desktop app that hands the making part to a coding agent you already pay for, and it shipped again yesterday.

The agent can live in your building now

Meta released a 30-billion-parameter agent model on Monday under Apache 2.0 that runs the whole tool-calling loop on one desktop machine, offline. The bill it displaces is not the chat subscription. It is the loop bill, and the compliance answer that killed the project before it started.

PDF inspector routes selected invoices to Google document reading while bypassing other pages.

pdf-inspector and the ten-cent invoice

Google will read a supplier invoice for ten cents a document and a generic page for thirty dollars a thousand. Firecrawl open sourced the piece that decides which of your documents need to be sent to a meter at all, and by their own count about half of them never did.

Most of your team no longer needs a ChatGPT seat

The free tier just got unlimited text chats and a better default model. For a forty-person shop that had been sizing a seat budget, the number that matters is now how few people actually need one, and the answer is smaller than the rep told you.

A gloved hand removes an expiring badge from a central cabinet linking workshop keys and temporary visitor passes.

authentik and the six-dollar front door

Fifty people with one company login costs about $3,600 a year on Okta's cheapest tier, or $4,200 on Microsoft's. authentik does the same job on an eighteen-dollar server, and the release that went to beta this week is the first version the OpenID Foundation has certified.
